MICHAEL CHUMA leads a dangerous chasing pack after shooting a round of 68 in round 1 of the 2023 Zambia Amateur Closed Championship.

Only 3 strokes behind is tournament favorite, Domonic Musonda who has enjoyed success on the Bonanza layout, proven last year as he cruised to victory in the Bonanza Open.

Bwembya Patrick Chanda, another who has enjoyed success at Bonanza lurks just 2 strokes behind. Weekend warrior Dr Jaabir Patel finished birdie – eagle to sound the alarm bells and let the youngsters know that he means business this week. Doc also lies just the 2 strokes behind.

Bonanza Golf Course has shown its teeth on day 1 despite a relatively short setup. Placement of the tee shot has become a premium as the rough and surrounds have been grown in to give a natural bush like feel to the course.

The action continues tomorrow and after the round 2 results are in the field will be cut down to 65 players and ties. The event has been registered with the World Amateur Golf Ranking® body which is governed by the R&A and USGA. Players who perform will see themselves being part of the World Amateur Golf Rankings order of Merit.
